It’s that time of the year…

So, this years award season is on for real since the Golden Globe Awards ended a couple of hours ago. There were some pretty interesting and surprising wins this year. Maybe the biggest surprise was that the French silent movie “The Artist” won Best Motion Picture (Comedy). It’s quite an unique film, since not a single word is uttered in it. That didn’t stop the leading actor in the film Jean Dujardin, from winning Best Actor (comedy or musical) at tonights award ceremony. In addition, it won Best Original Score.

Best Motion Picture (Drama) went to Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants”. George Clooney received Best Actor (Drama) for his role in the film.

Martin Scorsese received this years Best Director for “Hugo”, beating heavy competition from both George Clooney (The Ides of March) and Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris).

In the Best Actress (Drama) category, Meryl Streep got her 7th Globe for her role in “The Iron Lady”, playing former prime minister Margaret Thatcher. This was somewhat unexpected, as Viola Davis for her cherished performance in “The Help”, had been predicted the winner. However, her co-star in the movie, Octavia Spencer got her first Globe for her supporting role in “The Help”.

Michelle Williams won the Best Actress (Comedy or Musical) award, for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn”.

As the Golden Globe goes hand in hand with the more prestigious Academy Awards, we probably already know who are the winners. Even so, this is only the beginning of the season and we have more to look forward to as the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Awards) nominations are to be announced tomorrow. The SAGA (Screen Actors Guild Award) will be held the 29th and finally the Oscars are ending the season at the end of February.
